Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre

Attractions

The Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre (MFDC) is part of Fisheries Victoria, it promotes sustainability and conservation by increasing awareness and understanding of the marine and freshwater environment.

Located on the shores of Swan Bay in Queenscliff approximately one and half hours from Melbourne, the centre provides a unique location to learn about the plants and animals that inhabit Victoria’s coastal, marine and freshwater environments.

The MFDC aims to create an awareness of the issues concerning Victorian fisheries, recreational fishing and the marine and freshwater environment. This is a key concern of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. The MFDC Queenscliff provides education services that aim to do just this.

The MFDC provides curriculum-based education for early childhood, school and tertiary groups as well as programs for the general community. In addition the MFDC offers a number of specialised programs such as volunteer training.

Facilities include an aquarium, student laboratory, classroom and resource room and we are also ideally located for field activities being surrounded by a diverse range of habitats including rocky shores, mudflats, salt marshes, seagrass meadows, mangroves, sand dunes and temperate reefs. The majority of activities are conducted in Marine National Parks and Sanctuaries.

Due to current health advice on social distancing, please contact the business for the most up to date information regarding opening times and services.
