What’s on in New Zealand

Geraldine

Quintessentially Kiwi

Geraldine is a quintessential Kiwi town with an artistic vein running right through the centre – the perfect place to relax, unwind and discover all the reasons this country town is such a popular spot to visit.

Geraldine can be found 140 kilometres south of Christchurch, and 35km inland from Timaru, in New Zealand’s South Island. You may ask ‘why should I visit here?’ Well, why not! Here are just some of the reasons to spend some time in this small, yet mighty destination.

There is always a warm welcome here
Forget the hustle and bustle of larger “tourist” towns, Geraldine is the place where you will be welcomed with open arms, in a genuine and helpful manner.  Geraldine is home to a great number of artists, many of whom have galleries and studios open to the public. Budding artists can learn from the masters, with workshops regularly held around the town.

Adventure galore
White water rafting, golf, fishing, nature walks and so much more can be found in and around Geraldine. From high end adventures to sedate natural serenity – it’s a buffet for outdoor adventurers.

Did we mention it’s stunning?
The word “stunning” doesn’t come close to describing the picturesque mountain backdrop behind Geraldine, with the world-renowned Southern Alps on the doorstep of the town. Just waking up to this sight makes the visit worthwhile.

Food, glorious food
Geraldine is the home of some of the country’s favourite artisan creations, including Addmore Elderflower drinks; Clearwater Organic Yoghurt; Talbot Forest Cheese – and of course, the sauce, condiment and jam company, and national icons, Barkers of Geraldine, started by tinkerer and all-round good guy Anthony Barker in 1969. Renowned for his DIY and love of great flavours, a hobby for fruit wine soon turned into something much bigger. You can sample and purchase their extensive range at their store in Talbot Street.  Excite the taste buds in Geraldine – you won’t be disappointed.

Boutique, like it used to be
Shopping in Geraldine is like it used to be – with gorgeous boutique stores, run by their owner and dedicated staff, with everything available from groceries to gifts. Wool and alpaca creations are easily found here, while the Geraldine Farmer’s Market is laden with fresh produce (after all, the area is renowned for this!) each Sunday. Definitely worth a visit!

And when its time to rest your head, relax and enjoy the purchases from the markets, we have the perfect spot to stay… imagine a holiday park so special and idyllic that people just pop in for a day visit! The Farmyard Holiday Park in Geraldine offers accommodation for all budgets – whether it’s a private sheltered powered site, tent site, furnished cabin, or self-contained unit you’re looking for. But it’s the animals and surroundings that make this holiday park spectacular. The local wildlife includes wallabies, donkey’s, alpacas, llamas, goats, kune kune pigs, highland cattle, cows, sheep and so much more! Kids can even enjoy donkey rides in the weekend!

Book your next stay at The Farmyard Holiday Park and make Geraldine a nice central base to visit the natural wonders and local events that surround it.
