New Zealand in Focus

Taupo, Turangi & Tongariro, New Zealand

Great Lake Taupo is an active volcanic and geothermal region, situated in the middle of the north island, approximately 3.5 hours’ drive from Auckland.  It features Australasia’s largest freshwater lake as well as spectacular mountain ranges.  Known as nature’s ultimate playground, Taupo offers a multitude of events and activities for all ages.  From adventure and thrill seeking, to nature, biking, hiking, and culture, you can be assured you will find it all here.  This region is a must-see destination for New Zealanders and visitors to New Zealand!

Only 40 minutes from Taupo is Turangi, popular for trout fishing on the Tongariro River, skiing at the nearby Whakapapa ski field during the winter months, and for being the gateway to the Tongariro National Park.  Dominated by the three volcanoes of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, and Mt Tongariro, Tongariro National Park is popular in the winter with skiers and with hikers during the summer months.  It offers many scenically stunning walks including New Zealand’s best day walk and one of the best walks in the world – the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.  This walk will take you through beautiful and changing volcanic landscape over the 6-8 hour duration.  For Lord of the Rings movie enthusiasts you will have the opportunity to see ‘Mt Doom’ (Mt Ngauruhoe) up close!

After a day on the mountain or hiking the crossing there is nothing better than soaking in the tranquil thermal waters of a hot pool.  The Tokaanu Thermal Pools are located in the thermal village of Tokaanu and offer private mineral pools and a heated outdoor freshwater pool.  There are also plenty of free hot spots along the lakefront for a quick soak – a local will be able to point you in the right direction (or just look for the steam)!
