What’s on in New Zealand

Ruakaka, Northland

We love Ruakaka! It is a hidden gem of golden sand, glistening ocean views and friendly locals. Of course it is also home to a stunning Family Parks destination, Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park. Situated just two hours north of Auckland Airport and 25 minutes south of Whangarei, Ruakaka is a must visit location if you are heading North.

Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park is located right on the Ruakaka estuary and boasts beautifully kept park like grounds. There are accommodation types to suit all situations and budgets, making this holiday park a hive of activity all year round. If you are planning to stay between Christmas and end of January it pays to book ahead as this is peak season.

Ruakaka Town Centre is 4km away and has a range of boutique stores along with a supermarket, so you can stock up for your stay.

If boating is your thing you can launch your boat from the Marsden Cove Marina; a short drive away from Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park. The cafes and shops are worth a visit while you marvel at the boats and launches moored up in The Marina.

Alongside swimming, surfing, kayaking, boating and relaxing, Ruakaka and the Bream Bay area has a full events calendar to keep you entertained during your stay. Here are a few favourites from Anne-Marie and the Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park team:

Waipu Highland Games
Annually 1st January

Every year on the 1st January the clans come together for the iconic Waipu Highland Games.

Competitors and visitors travel miles to the games that includes heavy weight, piping, drumming, and dancing competitions.

The festival atmosphere offers an exciting family day out and the opportunity for some to learn more about their genealogy with a visit to the Avenue of the Clans.

Pack a picnic or purchase delicious fare from the local food vendors, and enjoy the first day of the New Year.

Beach and Boat’ Fishing Competition
Annually in February

The annual Beach and Boat Fishing competition is one of the biggest fishing competitions in New Zealand. High value prizes bring competitors from near and far to Marsden Cove Marina to try their luck out in the water.

Grab your mates and purchase your entry tickets early as numbers are limited.

Waipu Car and Bike Show
Annually in February

If you like the look of hot rods, muscle cars, vintage British or European cars and bikes; then this is the show for you.

This broad display is put together by passionate owners who love to share their restored and original cars and bikes with the public.

Stalls, entertainment and food vendors make up this perfect family day out.

All event proceeds go to the Waipu Lions Club with 25% going to Northland Rescue Helicopter.

Ruakaka Races
Year round

When the tag line is ‘Where the turf meets the surf’ you know you are in for a real experience at the races. The club holds race meets all year round, however their summer calendar is the most popular and draws race enthusiasts and those new to racing; building a real carnival atmosphere.

There are hosted options for corporates and spacious general admission areas to suit groups and families.

Soak up the atmosphere, the music, the food, the horse racing, and the fashion – this really is a day out of all the senses!

Bream Bay College PTA ‘Tides Out’ Fun Run/Walk
Annually in November

This really is a fun event with two family friendly distances – 5km and 10km.

The run/walk starts in front of the Ruakaka Surf Lifesaving Club and finishes on the reserve in front of the Ruakaka Beach Front Motel; taking you through Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park on your journey.

The earliest start time is 9.30am so you have heaps of time to finish your breakfast and make your way to the starting line.

Entries open around September each year so keep a look out online for more details.
