Mount Gambier’s famous Blue Lake

Kalganyi Holiday Park is a perfect spot to base yourself as you explore Mount Gambier and the surrounding region, where geological activity has resulted in a landscape dotted with lakes, sinkholes and caves.

A trip to Mount Gambier would not be complete without a visit to the famous Blue Lake where, from December to March, the water turns to a spectacular cobalt blue. Umpherston Sinkhole (also known as the Sunken Garden) is well worth exploring too. Since 1886 this geological formation has been transformed into a beautiful scenic garden, with a friendly colony of possums who emerge after dark.

If you’re ready to head underground you’ll find plenty of local cave systems to explore, including Naracoorte, Princess Margaret Rose, Engelbrecht and Tantanoola Caves.

30 minutes drive from Mount Gambier, Port MacDonnell is well worth a visit to sample some of the town’s famous Southern Rock Lobster.
