Description
The hideaway town of Poona is located on the mainland, opposite Fraser Island, and is popular with holiday-makers who enjoy the quiet life, quiet water and good fishing. The area of water separating the mainland from Fraser Island is called the The Great Sandy Straits, a sheltered waterway still very much the way nature designed it.
It is a marine wonderland - fish, dugong, turtles, dolphins, mangroves, seagrass pastures and birdlife. Many fish species are in abundance, along with sand and mud crabs. Excellent fishing is available either from the shore or out in the dinghy, where mangrove-lined creeks can be explored or you can try your luck in the deep holes along Fraser Island. Yabbies can be pumped on the low tide flats.
